Making Gmail work with Yahoo! Groups

Here’s something which made me allow send messages to my Yahoo! Groups from Gmail. The task at hand was to forward event mails to our college’s Yahoo! Group. Being repititive I wanted to auto-forward mails to the Yahoo! Group. However, am not a Yahoo! Mail Plus user so I opted for GMail, and edited my Group members to recieve mail from ‘myname@gmail.com’

Unfortunately, Yahoo! mentioned that this email address wasn’t allowed to mail to Yahoo! Group. Well, that was bad, but a bit of exploring on GMail fixed it.

Objective: Cheating the Yahoo! Groups to get emails from my GMail Account.

  1. Login to the GMail Account
  2. Goto Settings>Accounts Tab
  3. Click on Add another email address in the Send Mail As… section
  4. A Pop up appears.
  5. PopUp
  6. Enter your Yahoo! Email address in the Email Address Field.
  7. Complete the verification process (you would have to open Yahoo! Mail for this).
  8. Now Compose Mails and send mails to your Yahoo! Groups, without opening Yahoo! Email. The logic is that GMail makes Yahoo! Groups think that emails are coming from the Yahoo! Account only.
  9. Yeah, you cannot recieve emails back to the GMail id, until you configure it as a POP3 id (which would divert all your Yahoo! Mails to GMail)

Gmail Phishing!

This happened with me 5 minutes ago, as I just opened my GMail mailbox, I had a mail telling me about how my mailbox shall be terminated if I don’t visit the Verification website. Fortunately, I read the URL and it didn’t seem right.

This got me going, I copied the URL and visited the page on Flock (thats my browser), and here’s a snapshot on how well Flock detected it. Then I used the same URL on Internet Explorer 7, the phishing filter didn’t give any warning even when i tried a false sign in! So much for security, but the scary thing is the web page which is amazingly authentic.

The smart asses down there have made all links point to GMail pages except for the Sign In button! Have a look at the mail contents below:

Here’s how both MS IE 7 and Flock behaved(or say didn’t)

Gmail Phising on Flock

IE_Gmail_Phisng

By the way, I did report the Phishing to Microsoft…

For how long?

I am sure this has been complained and blogged about before. But, I just had to talk about it! I realised that its over 3 years since I have been using Gmail, and 2 years since I have been using Gtalk.

Wonder of wonders! They were Beta then and they are Beta Now! I wonder what happened to the various stages of software release life cycle? Well, so again I refer to Wikipedia and reach this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_stage#Beta

Well, even people contributing to Wiki are also complaining, is this a cute smart way to avoid support, or does G00gle perptually plan to keep Gtalk, Fr00gle, Gmail and Orkut in Beta for another few years? Also, now the same cool GMail and GTalk interface seems quite bland to me….its getting boring. What about some themes and stuff?

Is anyone at G00gle thinking?
